HbA1c 1%- What makes it so crucial?

What is HbA1c-Introduction

27 Aug 2024 | Chin

A hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) test measures the amount of blood glucose attached to hemoglobin. It shows what the average amount of glucose attached to hemoglobin has been over the past three months.

Compared to fasting blood glucose, HbA1c readings are not affected by short term glucose fluctuations

Fasting Blood Glucose HbA1c
Reading (m/mol) fluctuates throughout the days- fasting needed to obtain the reading
Reading (%) is same throughout the three months- no fasting needed
Reading affected by diet and lifestyle
Measures only the recent average blood sugar (glucose) level of past three months
Difficult to predict whether the individual is truly diabetic or not
Accurate way to determine the diabetic status, for eg: prediabetes or diabetic

A normal HbA1c level shows reading that less than 5.7%. An individual considered diabetes if the HbA1c reading is 6.5% or above [1].

What are the impacts of reduction of 1% HbA1c levels?[2]

A 1% reduction of HbA1c levels might seems very little but in fact there are large health impacts. Lowering HbA1c by 1% helps with lowering the risk of:

Death due to peripheral vascular disorders
lowering 43%
Amputation due to microvascular complications
lowering 37%
Diabetes related death
lowering 21%
Heart attacks & myocardial infarction
⭣ lowering 14%

Besides that, a meta-analysis on chromium was conducted, with the dosage of between 50-1000 µg /day and it was consumed from 4-25 weeks revealed significant reduction of the following:

Therefore, how to maintain a healthy level of HbA1c?

  1. Routine monitoring of blood glucose and HbA1c as well as medications are needed for a better glucose control: Always follow up with your physician or health professionals if you are on diabetic medications. For non-diabetics, always look out for pre-diabetes signs too by checking blood glucose levels regularly
  2. Avoid sedentary lifestyle: maintain a healthy dietary habit (for eg, suku suku separuh, less carbohydrate-do take note starch converts into glucose in body) and increase of physical exercise
  3. Proper nutrition. For eg, adding mineral chromium in diet. Studies showed that intake of chromium reduces the HbA1c level by 0.5-1.1%. [3][4]

GTF, or known as Glucose Tolerance Factor, together with chromium, is essential for glucose metabolism. The patented formula of Lactoferrin-chromium complex enhances the absorption of chromium, therefore regulating the blood glucose level by turning glucose into energy.
